Background: Campylobacter is the leading bacterial cause of human gastroenteritis worldwide. This study was performed to determine the prevalence of Campylobacter infection in Korea based on the National Surveillance Data (EnterNet Korea), from 2012 to 2015.
Methodology: Stool specimens from 70,406 patients with diarrhea were collected to identify the pathogenic bacteria. Campylobacter infection rates were analyzed every month for a period of four years. Identification and analysis to identify Campylobacter were conducted using the "Guideline of the National Institute of Health Diagnostic Laboratory: Disease specific protocol".
Results: Among the 70,406 stool specimens, pathogenic bacteria that caused diarrhea were isolated in 11,875 stool specimens and Campylobacter was identified in 716 specimens (6.03%). Isolation rate of Campylobacter increased during the four years compared to other pathogens (Salmonella spp., Pathogenic E. coli). Isolation rate, according to age, showed that the highest number occurred among those from 10 to 30 years old.
Conclusions: Educating food handlers on safe food handling practices, specifically on raw chicken, is needed to prevent Campylobacter infection. Moreover, monitoring for the increased prevalence of Campylobacter infection, efficient information system, and surveillance to prevent infection should be continued.
